Mia and I returned home to a clean dog, a heat wave and a garden that needed harvesting. I missed tending and caring for plants that seemed to explode while we were away. The sunflowers now stand chin high, my avocado has begun to sprout a leg and the potato flowers have come and gone. Herbs are everywhere and need harvesting and don’t get me started on the weeds!
To reward myself for the 10 hour drive and what promises to be a day of hard labor and sunburn, I decided to pick the peas last night. Harvesting by firefly light and in fact, gardening (code for weeding) in the evening is one of favorite summer past times. It’s magical! Just, you, the work, fireflies dancing about your face and legs, the.smell of barbecue and the sounds of evening swims and visiting neighbors. (A word of warning, weeding in the evening signals “dinner time” for mosquitoes, so use repellent!)
