It’s prom season, Dear Readers, that means it’s the season of gowns, uncomfortable yet glittery high heel shoes, flowers, parties, tickets and drunk driving awareness drills. Prom season is also an excellent time to serve mocktails, or promtails as I like to call them, with nibbles. That said, promtails and nibbles may only be offered to those kids reveling in prom activities IF the parent offering to do so is perceived as being “cool” enough to serve promtails and nibbles. You might have guessed, I DO NOT fall into the “cool” category but if you do, Dear Readers, please share what you will serve to your beautiful prom attendees in the comments section.
I think a promtail with layers of color, cherries and an umbrella (like a mock Mai Tai) would be a hoot. Alongside that I would offer simple nibbles like spicy Marcona almonds and cucumber slices topped with an herby cream cheese. I would not offer anything too filling or fatty, just some treats to munch in a single bit to prevent both over- eating and possible stains. If you think your kid doesn’t think you’re cool NOW, just wait until you serve foods that could stain OR get stuck in their teeth OR give them bad breath! No matter what, it will be your fault so avoid herb garnishes and raw garlic or onion.
