I got to meet Mister McFeely (David Newell) from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood yesterday at our local PBS39 television station. I got to stand next to this adorable and charming man and say, “Speedy Delivery!” (The famous catch phrase of his character from the show.) My husband, Russell, and I even got to offer advice about a winery to visit in Northern California which he will be visiting in the coming weeks. I felt like a little girl again and an aging lady all at the same time.
Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Captain Kangaroo were two shows I grew up with and adored. The respectful and intelligent conversation I felt was spoken just to me and my brothers and I reveled in the sweet , calming kindness of Fred Rogers who always spoke with an “inside” voice. (He never lectured or yelled.) We always looked forward to what Mister McFeely would deliver to both Mister Rogers and to the land of make believe where beloved characters awaited. I adored the purring voice of Daniel Tiger and the high-pitched, scratchy, yet tender voice of the sassy Lady Elaine. I always wished I could climb aboard the trolley, even for a little while. Amid the terror and turmoil that has become America, we could use a LOT more respectful, intelligent and yes, calm conversation. Maybe we, Dear Readers, could set an example by using our “inside” voice and help make a beautiful day in our neighborhood.
