Toil. Toil. Broil and bubble. Scrub and clean or wrap it in foil.
Toil. Toil. Broil and bubble. Gather and pick or be poked with a stick.
When I work in my kitchen I am very efficient. I speak with economy and do with purpose. I do not toil. I play. Why? Because I run a tight ship. (The ship is my kitchen.) I am the Captain. I have a series of First Mates and wanna be First Mates. I am demanding of myself and so I am demanding of those I enlist to help. I am only this way in my own kitchen. I enter your kitchen, you are the Captain. I am the First Mate. I listen and to what is asked of me so I may be the best helper possible. I do not question you or doubt your plan. Why? Because, Dear Readers, I DO NOT like to be questioned or not listened to in the kitchen. I mean "question" in the sense of, 'Why are you asking me to do it this way?' Or my favorite, 'Oh! You mean you want me to do it now?' Well big fat DAH! OF COURSE I WANT IT DONE HOW I ASKED AND OF COURSE, I WANT IT NOW? (In fact, I wanted it 15 minutes ago but I am being nice!)Why else would I have asked?
There are those in our lives who are not good helpers. It is more trouble to enlist them as helpers than it is to simply do it yourself. There are few I am able to work side by side with in the kitchen. My mother, Ellen, my dearest friend, Claire and our daughters, Alyssa and Mia. Notice someone who is missing? Yep. My husband, Russell is not on the list. We do not work well together in the kitchen. In fact, any time spent in the kitchen together is good for a whopper of a drag down fight. Why? Because, Dear Readers, he accuses me of being a "control freak." OF COURSE I am a control freak!!!!! Jeez! I am a chef for goodness sake! DAH!!!!! Not only am I a "control freak" BUT I am in control! The fact I am in control is what Russ struggles with most. There is me directing and him and his sole "job" is to follow my instructions. I want, expect and need my instructions to be carried out precisely as I provide them. Why is that so difficult? I am the Captain. He is the wanna be first mate. We rarely cook together because I enjoy cooking and creating more than I enjoy fighting and poking with sticks, usually anyway. I should get a gold star because I have never, in over 25 years of knowing Russ, poked with a stick. I dream about it, definitely, but never once I have I done it. See? I am not so bad.
